Essence Magazine: Game Changers and Rising Stars: The Power List 2014
In creating this year’s Power List, Essence magazine named Michelle Bernard as a “Rising Star.” In creating this years list, Essence magazine “set out to identify the trendsetters, heavy hitters, rainmakers and moguls who are directing the action and setting new courses in their respective fields. To do that … [they] interviewed industry insiders, researched top lists and culled recommendations from other high-ranking women to find out who they are mentoring and the people they admire. [Essence ] also tapped leading organizations and trade groups to identify outstanding performers. The women featured on the Essence 2014 power and rising stars list “have clout around the world … and [have] also made great strides by leveraging new tools, such as social media, to expand their empires.”

Why She’s One to Watch:
Bernard founded her organization to promote social justice for people of color and minorities—particularly women. “I do my best to be a voice for those who have no voice in the most important political and policy debates,” says Bernard. Her use of mass media outlets such as CNN, MSNBC, the Huffington Post, YouTube and Twitter allows her to delve into issues on a larger scale. As author of Moving America Toward Justice: The Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights Under Law, 1963–2013 (Donning), she focuses on today’s civil rights challenges.
Life Lesson:
“I believe that each of us has a God-given talent to share with the world what will make our communities and the world we live in equal and just. We must work hard to fear no man, trust in our instincts and do our best to be on the right side of history.”
